Alcohol Rehabilitation Center and Alcohol Rehab Program
About Sunshine Coast Health Centre
Sunshine Coast Health Center is a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation center designed for successful, mature men struggling to make sense of their lives. By the time our clients or their family members contact us for assistance, most efforts to manage alcohol or drug use such as outpatient counselling, couples therapy, going to meetings, or sheer willpower have failed. As addiction progresses, critical dimensions of the human experience - physical health, careers, and marriages – are often in jeopardy.
OUR COMMITMENT TO CLIENTS
At Sunshine Coast Health Center, staff is committed to putting the client back in the driver seat of their lives - empowering them to think for themselves, reconnect with others and, over time, contribute their unique talents to make the world a better place for all of us.
OUR TREATMENT GOAL
Far more than merely attaining a measure of physical and emotional stability, the treatment goal at Sunshine Coast is to move clients toward transformational change through connection with:
- Self - self awareness, including the recognition that the client makes choices that determine his life,
- Others – engaging with fellow clients as people rather than objects, and *
- Personal Meaning - what gives the client his own unique sense of personal meaning. Many call this spirituality.
(*) Note: as in Martin Buber’s “I-Thou”
"Wholeness is not achieved by cutting off a portion of one’s being, but by integration of the contraries."
~ Carl Gustav Jung
Addiction is a complex condition that requires an integrated approach - addressing body, mind, and spirit. We believe that the leading theories on the origins of addiction are all correct, but only partially correct. For example, advocates of the ‘disease model’ of addiction may point to research showing the neurobiological impact of addiction, while behaviourists show the empirical evidence supporting coping skill training. An integrated approach acknowledges both the biological and psychological while also including the social and spiritual aspects of addiction.
“He who has a why can endure any how.”
~ Friedrich Nietzsche
While mankind continues to benefit from the progress of science and industry, these alone are incapable of providing mankind a fulfilling existence. A fundamental lack of meaning and purpose - what Viktor Frankl describes as an ‘existential vacuum’ - is often manifested in a state of inner emptiness from which many of our clients seek relief from through the use of drugs and alcohol.
“Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man as self-sufficiency. Man is a social being.”
~ Mohandas K. Gandhi
At Sunshine Coast, we believe that the inclusion of family is a critical component of effective addiction treatment. Furthermore, we consider group therapy and communal living as the main advantage of residential treatment over alternative forms of therapy. While recognizing the unique perspectives and challenges that may be best addressed in individual counselling, Sunshine Coast has designed its program to facilitate integration of clients into a larger support network of healthy, supportive family, friends and health professionals following treatment.
"...In my early professionals years I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?"
~ Carl Rogers
Sunshine Coast Health Center rejects the approach of many traditional 12-Step treatment programs that characterize individuals with alcohol or drug problems as “liars, cheats and thieves.” These labels and others like them (‘alcoholics’, ‘addicts’, ‘junkies’, etc.) serve only to objectify the very clients that seek our empathy and support.
